Informações – Programa de Pós-Graduação em Física

  • Requirements for obtaining master’s and doctor’s titles:

    Masters

    To obtain the degree of Master of Science – Physics it is required from the candidate:

        • obtain 22 credits distributed as follows: 8 credits in obligatory disciplines, being: 4 credits in Quantum Physics I, or Quantum Physics II, or Quantum Mechanics III; 4 credits in Electromagnetism III or Statistical Mechanics; 2 credits in Seminars; 2 credits in Teaching Internship at graduation; remaining credits in other graduate courses;  grade curriculum
        • enroll in the obligatory disciplines during the first two semesters;
        • approval in an examination that verifies the ability to read in English until the end of the first period. The unapproved student will have a second chance. Failure in this exam implies termination of the Program;
        • a Master’s Dissertation made with the supervision of a professor of the Department;
        • defense and approval of the Dissertation before a board of three professors appointed by the advisor and approved by the graduate committee of the University, with at least one professor external to PUC-Rio.

    Doctorade

    To obtain the degree of Doctor of Science – Physics the candidate must demonstrate capacity for original and creative scientific activity, in addition to sufficient knowledge that enables the use of scientific criteria in the evaluation of problems and methods. The candidate is required to

        • o obtain 40 credits, divided as follows: 12 credits in Quantum Mechanics III, Electromagnetism III and Statistical Mechanics, 4 credits in Seminars, 4 credits in Teaching At Graduation, 8 credits obtained in graduate disciplines outside the field of specialization of the thesis; curriculum grade
        • remaining credits in other graduate courses;
        • passing an exam that verifies the ability to read and write in English. The unapproved student will have a second chance. Failure in this exam implies termination of the Program;
        • approval in the Qualifying Exam consisting of an oral test, in the form of a seminar, whose theme will be the subject of his Thesis and will be preferably until the end of the second semester of the course;
        • publish at least one scientific article in peer-review international periodic, directly related to the Thesis subject;
        • a Doctoral thesis made with the supervision of a guiding professor of the Department, consisting of an original scientific work;
        • defense and approval of the Thesis before a board of five professors appointed by the advisor and approved by the graduate committees of the University, with at least two professors external to PUC-Rio.

    Admission and Registration

    1.1 Registration will be open together with UNIPOS, and must be made via the internet, click here to access the form.

    1.2 Registration for the exam implies that the candidate is automatically enrolled in the graduate programs of the institutions that organize the exam. The candidate does not need to register separately in the graduate programs of the institutions of interest.

    1.3 The candidate must send the documents through the website at the time of registration. The required documents are:

        • Undergraduate record
        • Masters record (when applicable)
        • CPF/RG or passport

    1.4 The student must request two (2) Letters of Recommendation to different Teachers of his/her knowledge. The letters must be filled out in the online form, click here to access the form. In the case of students with a Master’s degree, one of the letters must be requested from their advisor. In the impossibility of meeting this requirement, the candidate must justify.

        1. After the results of the Unified Exam are disclosed, those approved must again access the UNIPOSRIO page and complement their registrations by selecting which institutions wish to apply to apply for a vacancy. The interview will be held in a single place to be disclosed.

    It is important to emphasize that once you have passed the Unified Exam, the student who chooses the Graduate Program in the Physics Department of PUC-Rio must apply for it, through the link online registration:

        • diploma (or certified copy) of the Undergraduate course in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Engineering;Obs: if you do not already have the diploma, the candidate must send a certificate of completion of the undergraduate course (or certified photocopy of the degree). If you are still attending the last graduation period, the student must present a certificate of the course before the registration, or at the time of enrollment. In any case, the university will not issue the diploma or certificate of obtaining a master’s degree until the undergraduate diploma is presented to it;
        • curriculum vitae, with information relating to the applicant’s school and professional life;
        • authenticated school records If the applicant is still attending the last period before graduation, he/she must send the partial school record (up to the previous year or until the date of dispatch).
        • two 3×4 or 2×2 photographs;

    After the approval of their registration by this committee, the candidate must register within the deadlines provided for by PUC-Rio calendar, at Admission and Rgistration Board (DAR).
