Understanding hybrids of SWCNTs

The fabrication of pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) within the last decades has achieved materials approaching the structural theoretical predictions. Also SWCNT-hybrids with on-wall functionalization, fillers and intercalation elements within tube-bundles are nowadays easily produced with different methods. Although the electronic and optical properties of pristine SWCNT can be unraveled with more than one spectroscopy technique, working with hybrids of SWCNT still embraces significant challenges because controlling and modifying those properties implies understanding interactions of the SWCNTs with other structures or molecules. One example are the clear photoluminescence (PL) changes in filled SWCNTs. In this context, small diameter tubes can form novel hybrids confining linear carbon chains (LCC) or graphene nanoribbons (GNR) that offer extremely attractive new insights. I will show our efforts towards identifying the charge transfer on SWCNT hybrids systems confining different structures including LCC and GNR. Additionally, we will review how energy spectroscopy techniques can nicely disentangle the characteristic density of states of SWCNTs with different hybridizations unambiguously, and also how to unravel changes in a site- selective electronic structure.
