The front line of quantum foundations

Jacques Pienaar – University of Massachusetts, Boston

23/03 –  5a. feira – 17h – sala L776

Abstract: What does quantum theory tell us about reality? This is a very old question. Most physicists have heard of the debates between the Copenhagen interpretation, the deBroglie-Bohm interpretation, and Everett’s many-worlds interpretation. Today everybody has heard of Bell’s theorem. But that was proposed in the 1970s, and most of the important experiments showing violation of Bell inequalities were completed before the year 2000. What has been happening in the field of quantum foundations since then? In this talk I will give an overview of some of the new questions and open problems that have recently been discussed in quantum foundations, as well as discussing a whole new category of quantum interpretations that has emerged over the last four decades, including QBism, Rovelli’s Relational Quantum Mechanics, and others.
