Two-dimensional (2D) quantum materials that are single to a few-atoms thick have attracted significant attention as they offer a platform for exploring novel phenomenon that could potentially revolutionize the fields of electronics, spintronics, sensing, and quantum computing. Due to their unique geometries and large surface areas, the 2D quantum materials gives rise to many distinctive properties with novel functionalities not available in conventional materials. In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to 2D quantum materials, and discuss some recent results from my group’s effort in understanding electronic and vibrational properties of a few emerging materials in 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, Kagome lattice semiconductors, and 2D topological insulators.

 

Short Bio:  Dr. Saiful Khondaker is the Assistant Vice President for Research, Director of Center for Ultrafast Dynamics and Catalysis in Emerging Materials, and a professor of nanotechnology, physics, and electrical engineering at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Khondaker received his Ph.D. degree in 1999 from the University of Cambridge. During 2001-2005, he worked at the University of Texas at Austin, first as a postdoctoral fellow (01-03) and then as an assistant director at the center for nano and molecular science and technology (03-05). He joined UCF in 2005 as a tenure track assistant professor, was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2010 and full professor in 2017. He was appointed as an office of research faculty fellow in 2019, and assistant VP for research in 2023. Dr. Khondaker’s research is in the fabrication and electron transport investigation of nanoscale materials and devices. He published over 110 peer reviewed journal articles in high impact factor journals with over 11000 citations and a H index of 41. He delivered more than 70 invited talks at national and international conferences and prestigious institutions. He is a recipient of prestigious UK Commonwealth Scholarship (1994), National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award (2008), multiple UCF research awards (2010, 2015), UCF teaching award (2017), JSPS invitational fellowship (2016), and US Airforce Summer Fellowship (2016-18).
