MAGNETISM APPLIED TO ART

Line of activity:

  • Development of techniques of registration and testing of authenticity of art works; dating of ceramics and primitive rock paintings.

  • We obtain the magnetic images of oil painting, acrylic painting, sacred sculptures, ceramics and cave paintings. A new technique is been developed for to test authenticity of art works, dating ceramic and cave art paintings. According to the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, conservation is an activity aimed at preserving cultural assets for the future. This activity includes examination, documentation, treatment and preventive care.  It has been discovered that the some of the pigments from the painting are magnetic and the magnetization can be detected by sensors like the SQUID and FLUXGATE using an x-y scanner. These inorganic pigments have transition metals that may be magnetic. They can be ferromagnetic, and we could orient them in an external magnetic field. It is possible to magnetic scan a painting and use the image to identify forgeries and date cave art paints.
