Transport between different locations of a fluid domain could be conveniently represented by the concept of Lagrangian flow networks, in which a discrete representation of the advection dynamics defines links between fluid regions. Within this framework, powerful techniques from graph theory become available which allows, for example, to determine partitions of an ocean area into regions internally well-connected but with weak interchange of fluid between them (marine provinces). Here I will describe the basics of this type of network construction, and some applications to physical and biological connectivity patterns in the upper layers of the Mediterranean Sea, with emphasis on larval dispersal.
