Advanced sensing based on organic multifunctional materials

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are a well-established class of devices for electroluminescence generation. Alternative driving schemes to generate electroluminescence from organic materials and to combine multiple functionalities, which offer fundamental advantages with respect to OLEDs, might impact a number of organic photonics applications including sensing.

Here we review the fundamentals of organic multifunctional field-effect transistors and discuss the concept of Organic Light-Emitting Transistors (OLETs)[1], highlighting their specific electrical, optoelectronic and photonic characteristics. We will discuss their use in advanced schemes for biosensing and for detection of contaminants in milk. We will also highlight how multiscale modeling and artificial intelligence approaches may impact the development of advanced organic electronic devices.
