• Class 1: Tue. (17/10), 17-19h
• Class 2: Thu. (19/10), 15-17h

Syllabus:
➡ Introduction
– historical notions, units, basic scales, frames
– observables (fluxes, isotropy, direct vs. indirect techniques: the why’s and how’s)
➡ The gist of the indirect method: from cascades to CR properties; Heitler model, generalizations. Importance of the UHECR
window
➡ Tackling the (Galactic) cosmic ray problem directly (towards modeling how CR evolve):
– Heuristics of the CR propagation, emergence of diffusive motion & ‘collisionless’ dynamics
– Phase space approach (quasilinear approximation and transport equation).
– ‘Scattering centers’ for collisionless dynamics (!): a gentle introduction to MHD, Alfvén waves, shocks
➡ Introduction to acceleration:
– Requirements to accelerate particles, ‘Fermi acceleration’ from the transport equation.
– Microscopic description (bouncing picture) of first and second order Fermi acceleration.
– Supernova Remnants & the standard CR scenario; why we need more, short notions to extragalactic accelerators
➡Tackling the (Galactic) cosmic ray problem via multimessengers (photons, neutrinos…): accounting for collisional
effects.
– Reminder/introduction to particle-physics notions & survey of relevant processes. Then, more in detail:
– Inverse Compton, a paradigmatic example of leptonic interactions and link with the synchrotron.
– Hadronic interactions: spallations, production of photons and neutrinos and links.
– Complementary notions relevant for UHECRs
– Impact of collisions on shaping CR spectra: toy examples of continuous E-losses, secondary species as diagnostics,
– Some aspects of primary (e.g. dark matter) vs secondary (inelastic x-sec), notions on the antiproton case study.
