Writing for Scientific Impact

Dr. Matteo Rini, Physics Magazine@PhysicsMagazine

29 de maio – 4a. f – 17h – sala L776

Abstract:
Scientists have a responsibility to share the meaning and implications of their work, both within and outside the research community, but generally receive little training in writing and communication. They thus often feel unprepared to communicate with the public, the media, funding agents and even other scientists. In this talk, I will present some thoughts on science communication, focusing on preparing papers for high-impact journals in physics. The presentation will discuss both general principles of effective communication and concrete examples of good writing techniques.

Bio:
Matteo Rini holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Physics  and has worked as a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and other institutions. His research focused on imaging ultrafast processes in liquids [Science 301, 349 (2003)] and solids [ Nature 449, 72 (2007)]. After serving as a Science Officer for the Climate-Change Directorate of the EuropeanCommission, he joined the American Physical Society (APS), where he is now the Chief Editor of Physics Magazine. Matteo is a professor of Science Writing and Communication at New York University (NYU).
