While many of the deep questions in quantum gravity involve physics at very short, Planck-scale distances, an elementary but important question is: is the gravitational field quantized in the first place? This question is relevant at much larger length scales and correspondingly more accessible energy densities. The past few decades have seen enormous advances in the quantum control and readout of increasingly larger systems. These have inspired a number of proposals for experiments testing aspects of quantizing the gravitational field. I’ll give an overview of the basic theory and some simple experimental proposals in this emerging program.
