For crytical device applications, properties as high saturation magnetization, low coercivity, high permeability and low noise are demanded in many practical designs. There are several approaches currently used in practical devices to fullfil at least partially such requeriments. Examples are the use of FeNi based films, or Ytrium Iron Garned films as well as amorphous and nanocrystalline films.

In this presentation we review our cumulative results on developing nanocrystalline films based on FeCuNbSiB in the search for a film with all properties described above. We start with a quick review on our work on recrystallized amorphous ribbons and move foward to FeSiB films and multilayers extensively studied using Magnetoimpedance, Barkhausen Noise, Magnetometry, VNA FMR and Electron Microscopy (TEM and SEM). The limitations and perspectives of this quest for the perfect ferromagnetic film are finely discussed.
